Imagine taking a break from food.  While your body loses weight and your health improves, you will use the time to learn about good nutrition and healthy eating habits so that when you are again eating food, you are better equipped to manage it.

Clinical studies show that when people are given very few food choices, or even no food choices, it is easier to decrease the amount of calories they consume each day.  By taking away the selection and preparation of foods, and reducing the vast array of available foods, people lose weight.  This is the concept called “stimuli narrowing.”  By using a portion-controlled meal replacement program, all the nutrition needed each day is included.  The benefits are in the reduced calories, complete nutrition, and perhaps most importantly in the ability to stick with the plan because no food choices are made.

Accelerated Phase (should be followed until at least 80-90% of your weight loss goal is achieved:

  • Complete meal replacement using OPTIFAST® Shakes, Soups, and Nutrition bars or HEALTHWISE pre-portioned entrees and bars.
  • Weekly weight, blood pressure, pulse and progress checks.
  • Regularly scheduled medical visits.
  • Regularly scheduled lab tests to monitor health and assist in program adjustments.
  • Education and support.
    • Identify appropriate goals.
    • Weekly education sessions.
    • Educational handouts.
    • Begin a fitness routine.
    • Journal feedback.
    • Private guidance when needed.
  • A supportive environment in which to solve problems and develop new skills.

Transition Phase (should be followed until the remaining 10-20% of your weight loss goals are achieved):

  • Dietitian guidance on a gradual introduction of food back into the meal plan after completion of the active phase.
  • Calories increase each week but remain restricted.
  • Regular medical monitoring continues.
  • Critical time for support and education.

  • Preventing a Weight Loss Disaster

  • We all want to make our family and friends happy, and many of us go to great extents to put a smile on others faces. But how much do you sacrifice your own needs to satisfy others happiness? Perhaps, for example, your children ask for pizza for dinner. While you might be focusing on your weight loss goals, you may suddenly feel guilty about not taking your children to the movies yesterday after you promised them they could go, and if you aren’t prepared then this feeling of guilt may drive to merge from your weight loss plan.

  • How Obesity May Affect the Brain

  • According to a recent study, obesity may affect areas of the brain that control appetite and the impulse to eat–and overeat. While many people argue that losing weight is all about self-control, medical weight loss specialists understand that obesity is a struggle that many people have difficulty attempting to overcome. Weight loss clinics in Baton Rouge can help you to overcome the impact that obesity has had on your mind and help you to begin living a healthier lifestyle.

  • Becoming Aware of your Hunger Cues

  • Often times when we are having a bad day, we gravitate towards something that makes us feel comfortable. Most comfort foods aren’t packed with nutrients, and aren’t being eaten and consumed because of hunger. Emotional or “head hunger” differs greatly from physical hunger. Emotional eating can be a day-to-day occurrence that most people live with without even fully understanding or realizing. Obesity is one of the largest health problems we face today, and without separation between head and physical hunger, it is often very difficult to make a long term change.
