3 Reasons To Eat Slowly

When you were younger, your mother probably warned you to chew your food and slow down if you were hurrying to finish a meal. It might be old advice, but there are still several reasons to continue listening to it today!

3 Reasons To Eat Slowly

  1. You’ll eat less. Research has shown that taking ample time to finish a meal makes you less likely to overeat. In fact, the weight of an entire country may support this idea. It’s believed that France has a lower rate of heart disease and obesity than the United States, despite being known for calorie-rich foods, because they take longer to eat a meal than Americans. Want to be able to eat your favorite foods and still lose weight? Your best bet is to eat those foods very slowly.
  2. You’ll lose weight. Whether or not you lose weight ultimately comes down to how many calories you consume compared to how many calories you burn. If you’re eating less, even if you’re eating the occasional high-calorie treat, chances are that you’re eating fewer calories at the end of the day. All you have to do to lose a pound is eat 3,500 fewer calories than you burn!
  3. You’ll improve your digestion. Chewing is an important part of the digestive process. Not only do your teeth break the food down into smaller pieces, but your saliva starts to chemically break down your food. The more slowly you eat and thoroughly you chew, the easier it is for your body to digest your food and absorb important nutrients. This can also help you avoid painful heartburn and acid reflux.

The next time you sit down to eat, remember what your mother told you. Slow down and chew your food!
